Bones UK are putting a new face to rock music, this time; it’s a far more feminine face than rock is used to.

In January, London-bred Bones UK - consisting of vocalist Rosie Bones, guitarist Carmen Vandenberg and drummer Heavy - released their unplugged EP, and on that very same week, the pair were representing themselves (and, very lovingly, their fans) at this years Grammy awards. Alongside this, the band had just began touring with Korn and Breaking Benjamin, thus creating an incredible cluster of game changing musicians all performing in one night.

However, Bones UK are not defined by who they tour with or who their many acclaimed associates are, Bones are demanding your attention, and they very much deserve it.

Their debut album released a whirlwind of fresh rock into the world, with standout song ‘Pretty Waste’ leading them to their first Grammy nomination. Among the self-titled’s fantastic track list is a cover of the late David Bowie’s ‘I’m Afraid Of Americans’, creating an industrial, heavy rock spin on the track. However, if heavy rock isn’t really your thing, the album has two ballad type tracks, including the beautiful ‘Souls’ and dreamy, heart wrenching ‘Black Blood’, and if that’s more your taste, then the band has you covered with the aforementioned ‘Unplugged EP.’

The EP opens with ‘Beautiful Is Boring’, a real anthem to make you feel good about who you are, but this time the track comes with a stunning drawn out intro that leads us into a slower, far more sultry version of the original anthem.

Following this impressive opener is, without a doubt, the band’s most popular track, Grammy nominated ‘Pretty Waste’. More energetic than it’s predecessor, ‘Pretty Waste’ reminds us just why it was so deserving of that nomination. With poignant lyrics serenaded by Rosie’s hypnotising vocals, we are reminded of the unforgiving and relentless beauty standards set by society, more importantly, we are made to feel like those standards don’t matter, and who cares if you don’t fit into this manmade mould?

Ballad ‘Black Blood’ follows, almost bringing us down from the high that the previous two have given us. Setting a completely different tone, we are reminded of the band’s versatility and capability to make their listeners feel a range of emotions, which is further proven by ‘Filthy Freaks’, the proceeding track.Much like ‘Pretty Waste’ and ‘Beautiful Is Boring’, ‘Filthy Freaks’ is a track for everyone who has felt outcast from society, just for following the beat of their own drum.

Lastly, Bones treat us to an absolutely mesmerising rendition of their track ‘Souls.’ What could be interpreted as a love song, ‘Souls’ features some of the band’s most powerful and thought provoking lyrics. The EP came armed with a 27-minute short film, shot completely in black and white, as most of the bands work is.

Bones UK may not yet be a household name, but they are definitely getting there. With their unique styles, incredible talents, great relationship with their fans and genre-defining tracks, Bones UK are destined to be in the hall of fame for their contributions to music. That, and to up the sales of boiler suits and cargo pants.
